Sleeping Tech – Check the fan

NOISY COMPUTER – CHECK THE FAN  Usually, the single noisiest component in the PC is the fan. This could be the CPU fan or another fan that is installed in the computer case to keep things call. Fans are the biggest culprit. The other contributors to noise include the hard disk drive and DVD drive.  If your computer is noisy, first shoot compressed air into the notebook or the back of the power supply to see if that quiets it.  If it doesn’t take the side panel off the desktop and look inside.  Sometimes a loose cable will be touching the fan as it spins.  Reseat the cable and while in there give the unit a good compressed cleaning.  If it’s a notebook, you’ve got a problem and may have to pay a professional to take the unit apart to clean.  I’m surprised at how many home PCs get placed in hot environments, e.g. next to a window, or near the TV. Remember, one good way to reduce the noise level in your home PC is to place the PC in a cool environment. When you do that, you reduce heat build up in the machine and prevent the fans from whirring too much to keep the PC cool. As a result, your home PC will emit less noise. ASLEEP AT THE SWITCH:  The Delaware Fighting Blue Hens in the divison IA Championship Game.  Up 19-0 halfway through the 3rd quarter, they lose 20-19. LAST WEEK’S TRIVIA QUESTION: What is the name of the instrument shoe salespeople use to measure the size of feet?  SECOND CORRECT answer wins a free T-Shirt.  The correct answer is BRANNOCK DEVICE.  The first person to respond correctly was Greer F. however the 2nd correct answer and winner of the shirt was RON S.  THIS WEEK’S TRIVIA QUESTION: How long is a fortnight?  First correct answer wins a shirt.
